for my knowledge

Years and years ago, way before I got into kpop, I came up with an idea for an original piece set in a fantasy-style Korea, but I could not find anything about Korean naming conventions, that kind of stuff just wasn't easily available the way it is now with k-fandoms exploding in english speaking circles!! I randomly remembered it recently and thought that there is probably way more information about it in english now! and there is!!!!
From what i found, Korean names typically go X-XX, 1 character family name, one character generation name, one character given name.
So BOO (family) SEUNG (generation) KWAN (given)
Traditionally all the cousins and siblings in Seungkwan's generational tier would also start with "Seung." (this isn't very common anymore in practice from what i have read, i think soonyoung's family does it though)
This isn't a rule, but it's by far the most common thing, and the alternatives I saw mostly involved names that had two-character family names, like XX-XX or XX-X. In the later case, the people talking about it said that families would forgo the generational name, and only went with a given name.
And to be clear it isn't an actual rule or law or anything, all the articles I read about it always brought up this famous exception of a kidnapped 8 year old girl in Korean who had a like, 7 syllable name, so it happens, but the X-XX format is the vaaastly popular convention.
But the way the members struggle with Jo-shu-a's name makes sense now to me lol, the way they always narrow it down to two, and that running joke of "but what is his name?" "Jo."
some of the tabs I haven't closed yet lol:
2 syllable Korean names
how to format korean names
comment about how Korean names were first converted to Chinese so we cant be entirely sure how they were actually pronounced.
